Canadian watchdog warns consumers about recalled baby food

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is alerting consumers to a U.S. recall of organic baby food, saying some Canadians may have purchased the product through online retailers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recalled certain jars of Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast baby food on Feb. 16, saying the product may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism.

While the FDA has confirmed the product was not sold in Canadian shops, the CFIA has issued an advisory warning Canadians not to consume the organic baby food.

The FDA recall involves the following products:

Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley Wholesome Breakfast (4.5 ounce jars), UPC 23923-20223, expiry date Sept. 14, 2008.

Earth's Best Organic 2 Wholesome Breakfast Variety Pack (12 pack), UPC 23923-20295, expiry date Sept. 13, 2008.

Earth's Best Organic 2 Apple Peach Barley (4.5 ounce jars within 12 pack), UPC 23923-20223, expiry date Sept. 14, 2008.

There have been no associated illnesses reported in Canada or the U.S.

Botulism can lead to serious illness or death, and must be treated early. Symptoms can include blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and paralysis. In severe cases, the paralysis can restrict breathing so the patient requires a ventilator.
