Pesto recalled in Quebec, Ontario

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning Canadians not to eat two kinds of pesto sold in Ontario and Quebec.

Produced by Pétales et Cie, the affected products are Arugula and Blue Cheese pesto and Pesto Rosso Sundried Tomatoes pesto.

Both products were sold in 200 ml glass jars in Quebec and Ontario. All lot codes and expiry dates are affected by the recall.

The Blue Cheese pesto may be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, which may cause botulism. Food contaminated with botulism may cause respiratory failure, paralysis or death.

The Sundried Tomatoes pesto contains sulphites which are not declared on the label. People with sensitivities to sulphites — compounds used as preservatives — may have serious or life-threatening reactions.

The Quebec-based company is voluntarily recalling the products. No illnesses have been reported from eating either pesto.
