Old Williamsburgh Candle Corp. recalls candles for burn hazard

Old Williamsburgh Candle Corp. is recalling about 3.7 million Mason Jar Candles because the wicks can shift to the outer rim of the jar, causing the glass to overheat and potentially shatter, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Tuesday.

The recall involves Mason Jar Candles in various scents and colours, ranging in size from 3.5 ounces (99 grams) to five ounces (142 g). Replacement Mason Jar Candles, which are marked with a "Q" on the label, are not included in the recall.

The company has received 11 reports of the candles cracking or shattering, including one report of a laceration injury.

The candles were sold at dollar stores, discount stores and grocery stores across the United States from May through December 2006 for $1 to $1.50 US.

Consumers should stop using the candles and return them for a refund or exchange.
