MagneBlocks magnetic construction toys recalled

MagneBlocks is recalling about 40,000 magnetic construction toys from the marketplace because they could pose a potentially fatal risk to young children, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday.

Small magnets in the building pieces can come loose, the CPSC said. If children ingest more than one magnet, the magnets could pull together and cause intestinal perforation or blockage.

The company has received one report of a magnet coming loose. No associated injuries have been reported.

The recall involves MagneBlocks sets that have six or more plastic building pieces and six or more steel balls.

The construction sets were sold at stores across the U.S. and online from January 2004 through November 2006 for between $20 and $120 US.

The CPSC says children under age six should not play with toys containing magnets. If a magnet comes loose from one of the blocks in the set, consumers should remove the block and contact the company for a free replacement.
