Clarion recalls batteries for burn and fire hazards

Clarion Corporation of America is recalling about 2,500 of the batteries used in its navigation and entertainment systems, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday.

The lithium-ion batteries can melt or overheat, the CPSC says. The company has received four reports of the unit melting or overheating.

The batteries are used in the N.I.C.E. P200 portable navigation and entertainment system and are marked with the following: “Clarion NAVBATTERY,” “Rechargeable Li-Polymer Battery,” and “Made in Korea.” Only batteries with a serial number ending in UE or UF are included in the recall.

The units were sold in audio and electronics stores in the U.S. from May 2006 through December 2006 for about $900 US.

Consumers should stop using the batteries and contact the company for a free replacement.
