Advisory: Suspected tampering in Maroc clementines

Hamilton public health officials have issued an advisory warning of a suspected food-tampering incident involving Maroc brand clementines.

The advisory was issued on Dec. 22 after a person reported finding a needle in a piece of the citrus fruit purchased from a Mohawk Road Food Basics store in Hamilton.

Consumers are being asked to check their refrigerators and throw out any remaining clementines that were purchased from the same store between Dec. 11 and Dec. 20. Hamilton police are investigating the incident.

While the oranges are distributed nationally, the possible tampering is believed to be an isolated incident, the public health advisory warned. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has not received any other complaints but consumers are encouraged to be vigilant and check their clementines for signs of tampering.
