Crab cakes recalled for botulism danger

Thrifty Foods is voluntarily recalling its Kitchen Crab Cakes because of a contamination danger, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says.

The crab cakes may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism.

Consumers should check the packaging for the item code 29273. The recalled products, sold in Thrifty Foods stores across British Columbia, were made using Phillips brand pasteurized crab meat. The CFIA had recalled the Phillips crab meat in late October because of a possible Clostridium botulinum contamination danger.

There have been no associated reported illnesses.

Botulism can lead to serious illness or death, and must be treated early. Symptoms can include blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and paralysis. In severe cases, the paralysis can restrict breathing, requiring a ventilator.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall. Consumers can call the CFIA for more information at 1-800-442-2342.
