4 Natural health products put consumers' health at risk

Health Canada is warning consumers of four unauthorized natural health products that make unproven claims that could put users' health in jeopardy.

Ellagimax, Coral Max, Coral Max without Iron, and Advanced Arthritis Support capsules are marketed as dietary supplements but make claims normally associated with drug products. The federal agency says the products claim to offer treatment for cancer, arthritis and heart disease.

"The safety and effectiveness of these products have not been proven," Health Canada warned in a release.

Health Canada said the claims could deceive consumers into using these treatments as a replacement for traditional, proven medicines. The agency also noted that the products' unapproved health claims violate the Food and Drugs Act.

The four products, distributed by Florida-based Advantage Nutraceuticals, are not authorized for sale in Canada but may have been purchased online or brought into the country by travellers.
