Health hazard alert: Pasteurized crab meat may contain dangerous bacteria

People should not eat certain Phillips brand pasteurized crab-meat products because of a possible botulism danger, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has advised.

The products may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which can cause botulism. Botulism can lead to serious illness or death, and must be treated early. Symptoms can include blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing and paralysis. In severe cases, the paralysis can restrict breathing, requiring a ventilator.

Ontario-based Export Packers Company Limited, Brampton, is voluntarily recalling the products from the marketplace.

Included in the recall are:

  • Claw Crab Meat UPC 0 70057 00601 0

  • Jumbo Lump Crab Meat UPC 0 70057 00603 4 3

  • Colossal Lump Crab Meat UPC 0 70057 00602 7 4

  • Special Crab Meat UPC 0 70057 00605 8 5

  • Backfin Crab Meat UPC 0 70057 00604 1

The recalled products were distributed in Canada. There have been no associated illnesses reported.
Consumers can call the CFIA with any questions at 1-800-442-2342.
