Cans of chili, gravy pose botulism risk: CFIA

Consumers should avoid certain brands of chili and beef gravy because of a possible botulism risk, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has advised.

Cans of Fast Eddie's Crazy Chili sauce and Select beef gravy are being voluntarily recalled from the Canadian marketplace because they may contain the botulism-causing bacteria Clostridium botulinum.

Symptoms of the life-threatening illness include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dryness in the throat and nose and respiratory failure.

The recalled products, which have been distributed in Ontario and possibly elsewhere in Canada, were largely sold to food service establishments but may have also been sold in supermarkets and other retail outlets.

The CFIA hasn't received any reports of illnesses linked to the consumption of the recalled canned goods manufactured by Toronto-based Select Food Products Limited.
