Beware of bagged fresh spinach from U.S., advisory warns

People should not eat bagged fresh spinach from the United States until further notice, a federal advisory is warning after an E. coli outbreak that has made more than 100 Americans sick.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is attempting to find the bacteria source that prompted the outbreak that started last week and has spread to at least 19 states.

The Public Health Agency of Canada reported that no illnesses have been reported in Canada due to the contaminated spinach.

The advisory issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it was co-operating with the Public Health Agency, Health Canada and U.S. officials in the investigation.

Natural Selection Foods, LLC, of San Juan Bautista, Calif., has recalled all of its products that contain spinach in all the brands they pack with "Best if Used by Dates" of Aug. 17 through Oct. 1.

Natural Selection Foods, LLC brands include: Natural Selection Foods, Pride of San Juan, Earthbound Farm, Bellissima, Dole, Rave Spinach, Emeril, Sysco, O Organic, Fresh Point, River Ranch, Superior, Nature’s Basket, Pro-Mark, Compliments, Trader Joe’s, Ready Pac, Jansal Valley, Cheney Brothers, Coastline, D’Arrigo Brothers, Green Harvest, Mann, Mills Family Farm, Premium Fresh, Snoboy, The Farmer’s Market, Tanimura & Antle, President’s Choice, Cross Valley, and Riverside Farms.

Consumption of food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria may cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses.

People with compromised immune systems, young children and the elderly are at particular risk of developing serious complications. Individuals who experience symptoms of illness should contact their doctor.
