McDonald's goes McMini

McDonald's invited me to a tasting of the McMini, their newest product last week.

The all-white chicken breast sandwiches -- your choice of crispy or grilled -- are served on a mini-baguette in gourmet flavours of pesto or spicy thai.

I never thought I'd see table service and real china in a McDonald's but that's how my samples were served to me, along with a plate of the chain's apple slices.

I have to admit the sandwiches were pretty good, albeit heavy on the garlic mayonnaise. The chicken breast was surprisingly moist and flavourful.

The baguette didn't have the right flaky outside, chewy inside of an authentic loaf but was decent. The spicy thai dressing was more sweet than spicy, but the pesto was definitely passable especially for a fast-food product.

McDonald's says the McMinis ($1.99 plus tax) are a response to customers asking for more chicken choices, and geared towards women who look for smaller portion sizes or snacks.

Indeed, their marketing campaign has been pegged on the "small things in life."

At 260 calories and 9 grams of fat for a spicy thai grilled McMini -- not too shabby for a fast-food sandwich -- I also wondered if McDonald's is trying to come across as providing "healthier" products.

Everyone has his or her opinion about the global conglomerate. I will admit, no matter how hard I try to eat healthy, I do occasionally succumb to the convenience of McDonald's.

Would you try the McMini? Or do you boycott fast food?
