Bon voyage, bon appetit

Not having travelled a great deal, road trips and vacations still get my heart racing and my mouth watering.
Earlier this spring, I took my first major train trip and was pleasantly surprised with the tasty dinner I received: a roasted veggie kabob app, mixed greens, steamed salmon with peppers and potatoes, and a blueberry panna cotta for dessert. (Not to mention the coffee, digestif and chocolate mousse cup after dinner proper!)
My favourite airline has a hip and comfy departures lounge that offers free cookies, an assortment of beverages and a sleek coffee machine that dispenses a great americano. Once onboard, even a short one-hour jaunt
merits a quick drinks-and-snacks service: say, juice and organic yogurt with granola or a small baguette sandwich.
This tasty breakfast helped set a good mood for travelling: organic yogurt and granola, a baked treat and a glass of iced tea. (Jessica Wong/CBC)
As for road trip meals, my favourite was on Hawaii's Big Island, where a small, old-fashioned hotel kitchen has a tidy little side business making delicious packed bento lunches for visitors making the trek out to Volcano National Park.
Amazing experiences like the ones I've mentioned above are all condusive to having a great vacation. Unfortunately, I've also had my share of mystery-meat-in-gluey-sauce meals on trips.
What's the best meal you've ever had while travelling? What's the worst?

About the blog
From trends and culture to politics and nutrition, Food Bytes serves up tasty tidbits about food and the issues surrounding it that flavour our everyday lives.
About the writers
Amber Hildebrandt writes for CBCNews.ca in Toronto. Growing up on a farm in Manitoba, she acquired an insatiable appetite, but it was during a stint in Japan that she developed her discerning tastebuds and "foodie" ways.
Andrea Chiu is an associate producer at CBC Radio Digital. Though she loves to eat, cook and discuss food,
don't ask her to bake. It never turns out well. She tweets as @TOfoodie on Twitter and organizes food and wine events in Toronto called FoodieMeet.
Tara Kimura is the consumer life reporter for CBCNews.ca, covering a wide range of issues that range from rising food costs and the growing organic movement, to new trends in the marketplace.
Andree Lau is a CBC web reporter in Calgary. Her journalism career includes seven years as a CBC-TV reporter. Her own blog called "are you gonna eat that?" chronicles her eating adventures (including sampling snake and camel hoof tendon).
Jessica Wong is a CBCNews.ca writer who loves to eat and cook, as well as discuss, read and watch programming about food, sometimes all at once.
Kevin Yarr, CBCNews.ca's writer in Prince Edward Island, wrote about food and beer for national and regional magazines before joining the CBC. He acquired a desire for new tastes on his first trip to Europe, and an appreciation of eating locally and in season when he finally settled down on P.E.I.
Elizabeth Bridge is a writer with the CBC Digital Archives in Toronto. She first ventured into the kitchen as a child to indulge a sweet tooth by baking cookies and making fudge. A student budget compelled her to be a vegetarian (for a while) and instilled in her an ongoing curiosity about food and cooking.

In Big Bend National Park in Texas, you can hike to the Mexican border and cross the Rio Grande to an isolated village.
Here we had ice cold Fanta orange pop in old fashioned well-worn bottles, and a very simple but incredible lunch. Freshly roasted chicken was placed in freshly made taco shells. Fresh tomatoes, lettuce and cilantro were added from a nearby garden. Dessert was homemade brownies. It was awesome!

The best meal I ever had while travelling was at Abby's in M'Chigeeng, Ontario on Manitoulin Island. On Thursdays during the summer they do a "Native feast", with a variety of game meats. The venison osso bucco on a bed of wild rice was incredible! There was also buffalo, moose, and whitefish that had been hauled out of Lake Huron hours before. Dessert included a wonderful trifle bursting with fresh berries and whipped cream.
