Meal planning SOS

By Andree Lau, CBCNews.ca

In my household, we try to plan out a week of meals, so there's no excuse or temptation to spend money and eat out. But it's easy to run out of ideas, or fall into the same cycle of pasta, curry, tacos, chicken salad, stirfry.

I've experimented with various menu planning websites but they're either badly designed or don't have interesting recipes.

Enter SOS Cuisine.

An institution burns down

by Kevin Yarr, CBCNews.ca

Charlottetown's Maid Marian's Diner was gutted by fire last Wednesday night, a total loss. The story was one of the most read on the CBC website the next day. Not bad for a small town greasy spoon, and you have to wonder what would spark such interest.

The juicy details

By Elizabeth Bridge, CBC Digital Archives

That morning glass of sunshine doesn't look so bright anymore. I've never had the illusion that the frozen concentrated orange juice in my freezer could ever approach the taste of freshly squeezed, but reading about a new book has really opened my eyes about OJ.

Jamie Oliver, squeezed shoppers, and meat-free Thursdays

By Tara Kimura, CBCNews.ca

CBC Arts has posted a fantastic Q&A with celebrated chef Jamie Oliver. Some of the excellent questions submitted by CBCNews.ca readers included: if you had the power to eliminate one "food" from the marketplace, what would it be? Fiddle-dee-dee

By Jessica Wong, CBC News

When spring finally comes along, I'm always happy to see local produce turning up in the market. In recent years, the little, alien-looking fiddleheads have attracted my attention — they're even offered in some large grocery stores nowadays — but I'd never tried them. Inspired by a colleague waxing poetic about the springtime treat in her Facebook status last week, I decided to take the plunge.

Hail Caesar!

By Andree Lau, CBCNews.ca

We've all done it. Travelling in a foreign country, seized by a thirst for a Caesar, but answered by only a blank stare, or a suggestion of a (much lesser) Bloody Mary.

The Bloody Caesar is a uniquely Canadian cocktail, and you either love it or hate it. Me, I love it.

The return of the moveable feast

By Tara Kimura, CBCNews.ca

Britons are stocking up on scotch eggs and sausage rolls to stuff into their picnic baskets this year, according to a recent survey, reported by The Guardian.

According to the report, consumers in the U.K. are expected to spend a whopping £250 million ($435.9 million Cdn) on picnic items this year. Analysts attribute the rise of the humble picnic to an anticipated hot summer and the flat economy – which will likely force more people to take small day trips over far-flung, weeklong holidays.

I scream, you scream

By Elizabeth Bridge, CBC Digital Archives

An ice cream maker is one of those kitchen devices I'd never have bought for myself: bulky, a chore to clean and good for only one thing. Plus, you can buy some pretty fine ice cream at the supermarket, so why bother making it at home?
