As part of a campaign to cut down the number of alcohol-related traffic deaths in the state, the American Automobile Association (AAA) Texas branch offers a cut-rate ride service on Labour Day weekend to keep people on the sauce out of the driver's seat.
The Lone Star state holds the dubious distinction of leading the country in drunken driving fatalities, totalling 1,354 in 2006, up from 1,320 the previous year, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. As usual, the AAA encourages drinkers to have a designated driver, but AAA Texas also offers a contingency service on the holiday weekend.
The Tipsy Tow program, now in its 21st year, offers impaired drivers a tow home. The service only goes to a driver's residence and has no charge as long as they live within ten miles. After that distance, drivers will pay the rate charged by the tow truck contractor.
