Scotland Yard is calling on some expert fashionistas for a redesign of their iconic but impractical bell-shaped high helmets and uniforms.
Students at the London College of Fashion will attempt to craft a new helmet, incorporating old traditions with a fresh and functional twist, a spokesman for Scotland Yard said Sunday.
Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Roberts also said the students would be challenged to correct issues such as sweaters that catch too easily on bushes and a need for more pockets.
"We will be working with the London College of Fashion to see how we can retain the traditions of the Met while ensuring our uniform is fit for 21st century policing," Roberts said.
Officers will test the new designs. Members of the public and the police force will also be asked to offer their takes on the new patterns.
