Alberta is looking for a buyer with at least $1 million to buy a 28-year-old airplane that has flown former premiers Ralph Klein and Peter Lougheed.
The 1979 Beechcraft King Air 200 is one of five planes in the government's fleet used to fly the premier, cabinet ministers and senior officials.
Service Alberta spokesman Eoin Kenny said the province is taking bids for the next two weeks. The reserve bid is $1 million.
"It might have some cachet," he said. "I would suspect that somebody who's looking at these planes is more interested in getting a good bargain on a used aircraft rather than who was the previous owner."
The twin-engine prop plane seats seven and includes a portable toilet and a galley with a coffee pot, a small oven and ice drawer.
Harold Maron, who works at J.A. Spears and Associates, a Toronto company that does aircraft appraisals, says at 12,000 hours, the King Air has flown more than the average, but the province shouldn't have trouble finding a buyer as the plane is well-priced and in good shape.
He said the plane would be attractive to "private companies or public companies that are looking to move their executives in an efficient manner and may not justify buying a newer airplane and would consider something that's been well maintained and a little bit older."
The province is selling the aircraft rather than pay increasing maintenance costs on an older plane, said Kenny.
Alberta has another King Air plane which is more than 25 years old. It will be sold later this year. The government has already bought two new planes for $11 million to replace the two older aircraft.
