Christians can now call up the scriptures on their cellphones thanks to a new initiative by the South African division of the International Bible Society.
The Bible Society announced this week that South Africans would become the first consumers in the world to be able download the complete Bible on their cellphones.
"The Virtual Bible will enable the Bible Society to supply the Bible to every modern cellphone user in a fast and affordable format," Rev. Gerrit Kritzinger, the CEO of the Bible Society of South Africa, said in a release.
Consumers will pay about 40 rand, about $5.90 Cdn, to download one of the several versions that are available.
The society estimates that there were about 31 million cellphone users in South Africa in 2005.
