Mayor Richard Daley is trying to put foie gras back on the menu for Chicagoans, saying he doesn't agree with the city's controversial month-old ban of the delicacy.
Daley will support a repeal proposal by two city alderman. City council introduced a ban of the French delicacy in August. Foie gras is made from the enlarged livers of ducks and geese that have been force-fed. Animal-rights activists have long argued that the practice of overfeeding is inhumane.
Daley didn't veto the ordinance, but deemed it a waste of time. Most recently, he called it "the funniest law they ever passed." The city's health committee will vote on the matter and determine if the issue should be brought before city council.
In 2004, California passed state legislation banning the production of foie gras and set a target of banning the sale of the delicacy by 2012. More than a dozen countries including the U.K., Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland have introduced legislation on the production and sale of foie gras.
