A New York woman, steaming mad after her free drink coupon was refused at Starbucks, has launched a $114-million lawsuit against the coffee company.
Last Friday, attorney Peter Sullivan launched a lawsuit on behalf of Kelly Coakley, 23, accusing the company of fraud.
Starbucks circulated a coupon via e-mail to a select group of Starbucks workers in the southeast United States on Aug. 23. Employees were invited to share the coupon with their friends and family.
But on Aug. 29, after the e-mail had been forwarded to thousands of people and posted on websites, the company retracted its offer. Starbucks officials said the e-mail had been redistributed beyond the company's original intent.
Sullivan has also requested class-action status to include other customers whose coupons were not honoured. The $114 million was an estimate to cover the cost per beverage for every person whose coupon wasn't honoured.
