Bill Guffey
By Jennifer Hollett
"Just me looking around, everywhere I look is a painting to me," says artist Bill Guffey. He's been painting for only two and a half years, but has already painted Paris, Hong Kong, the Canary Islands and San Francisco from his home in Kentucky.
"What I like to paint, the streets that tourists don't walk. Google Street View allows me to find that." His art blog, The Virtual Paintout, uses Google Street View as a way to travel the world virtually to find interesting locations and subjects to paint. To participate in the project, artists must use a view found through Google Street View as the reference for the painting or drawing. This month, Prince Edward Island was picked as the location of inspiration, drawing in over 70 pieces of art.
"I try to choose a place that has a variety, Guffey explains. "Urban, landscapes, seascapes. P.E.I. has it all. The architecture is wonderful, it looks like a beautiful place. Haven't been there. Would love to."
