The holidays are defined by annual rituals. There's shopping till you drop, eating till you unbutton your pants, and then making resolutions to exercise and save money in the new year. But mixed in with Christmas carols and chocolates are some offbeat and original traditions that families call their own. Here are some from our viewers, and the Connect team.

"Since our family has been spread to the four corners of the earth, we all raise a glass and toast to absent friends at one o'clock on Christmas Day." Editor David Horemans
"Growing up, before caller ID, Santa would call me and my sister every year, to make sure we were being good little girls. It was very authentic, my uncle, I mean Santa, would have bells jingling in the background and everything." Cross-Platform Contributor Jennifer Hollett
"In my family we always wrapped up some catnip, like a present, and put it under the tree. Then we would spend a good couple of hours watching the cat go more and more insane as it got stoned and tried to unwrap the gift. My brother believes this was a kind of animal metaphor for the frenzied insanity that is our family at Christmas." Reporter Nick Purdon
Connect returns on Monday, January 4, 2010. Until then! Happy holidays!
