It's all dark, Nordic Passion, fire and ice, and
a lament for something that was never to be. Hear how Sibelius'
failed aspirations inspired him to write one of the great violin
concertos - according to Pinchas.

This work was Sibelius’s sole concerto but it was not the
only composition he wrote for violin and orchestra. His Two Serenades
(1913) and Six Humoresques (1917) are both excellent shorter works.
It received its premiere in Helsinki on February 8, 1904 with Sibelius
himself conducting. The concerto was met with a luke-warm reception
so he revised it, making it shorter and brightening the orchestral
sound. The new score was performed in Berlin the following year
with Richard Strauss conducting.
