The work of about 150 amateur and professional painters and sculptors is on display this week at a newly opened art venue in Calgary. Found at cSPACE — found in the former King Edward School — the works are on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Saturday, when the first-ever People’s Portrait Prize will be handed out during a closing reception set for 7 p.m. The art fills four floors of the art space (1721 29 Ave. S.W.) with exhibitors paying $2 for each entry. In total, 265 works are displayed, with the winner chosen by a panel of judges. Visitors can vote for the People’s Choice Award. A closing reception is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, when the grand prize of $2,100 will be awarded.

The Illuminasia Lantern and Garden Festival runs until November at the Calgary Zoo. It features 366 handcrafted lanterns and multi-cultural entertainment and programming from China, Japan and India.
