Nouveau Projet celebrates first anniversary

nouveauprojet.jpg

Nouveau projet is a magazine that goes against the grain in so many ways.

At a time when so many major media outlets are going digital, Nouveau Projet is a paper magazine.

And as much of our communication is limited to a few dozen characters tapped out on a mobile device, Nouveau Projet proposes long, thoughtful, even intellectual pieces.

It's a bit of depth at a time when so much is on the surface.

It's been a year since the founders of the magazine took a huge risk and published the first edition, and it looks like the risk is paying off.

The magazine is selling, and the launch parties that are held when each new edition comes out have become the place to be for anyone who's branché

Proof, says co-founder and editor-in-chief Nicolas Langlier, that people were craving some substance.

How I started writing: Marie Hélène Poitras

The Quebec Writing Competition deadline is May 1st, 2013.

The competition is run by the CBC in partnership with the Quebec Writers' Federation, and is open to unpublished short stories.

The winner receives a cash prize of $1500, as well as a broadcast of their story on Cinq à Six, and publication in Maisonneuve Magazine and in an anthology by Vehicule Press

To help give you some inspiration, from now until the deadline, each week we will bring you the story "the moment".

The moment when a now-established writer got that initial courage to put the pen to paper or to sit down at the computer, and start to write.

The moment when a person knows, without question, that they are meant to be a storyteller.

We're starting close to home this week with the very talented Marie Hélène Poitras who works right here in our office.

She's an editor at Zone d'ecriture, and she's also the author of two novels and several other works.

Her most recent book, Griffintown, was shortlisted this week for the 2013 Prix Littéraire France-Québec.

We asked her to tell us how she started writing.

What Nicolas Langelier is reading

photo (1).JPGNicolas Langelier is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Nouveau Projet, a made-in-Quebec magazine that's celebrating it's first birthday this weekend.

The third edition of the magazine will be launched tomorrow night (Friday, March 22) at the Phi Centre.

Nicolas came into the studio talk about the first year of the magazine.

That interview will air on Cinq à Six on Saturday.

But in the meantime, we asked this young Quebec author, thinker and businessman what magazines he's reading. (Other than Nouveau Projet, of course!)

Listen to what he told us:
