Quebec Writing Competition Winners

On Saturday, January 5 Cinq à Six broadcast interviews with and readings by the winners of the 2012 Quebec Writing Competition.

Grand Prize Winner

Harold Hoefle.JPGThe grand prize winner of the Quebec Writing Competition is Harold Hoefle.

Judges' comments about his story "Ride":

"It carries us deep inside the racing thoughts of a drunk young woman with a looming decision. The deceptively straightforward plot hums with peril. The jury particularly appreciates the emotional complexity of the young woman's dilemma -- critical of her possible choice, yet caught for now in resignation. The story addresses personal choice, free will, and the socio-psychological forces that can act as roadblocks to change."

As First Prize winner, Harold receives a cash prize of $1,500, as well as the broadcast of his story on Cinq à Six. His story is also published in the Winter edition of Maisonneuve Magazine as well as in an anthology by Véhicule Press.

Second Prize Winner

What the judges said about her story:

"Manufactured" is an interior monologue written from the point of view of a sex worker well versed in manipulating the emotional needs of men. The interplay between her modus operandi and her feelings about playacting are underscored by an evocation of the power of sexuality for rapture and forgetting."

As second prize winner, Willow receives a cash prize of $1,000 and the broadcast of her story on Cinq à Six. Her story is also published on the Maisonneuve magazine website, as well as in an anthology by Véhicule Press.
