Making the case for new music

The Montreal/New Music International Festival is wrapping up this weekend.

New music-- also sometimes known as contemporary music or musique actuelle -- has many dedicated followers. But for some are intimidated by this rather academic form of music, and others find it downright unpleasant to listen to.

Cassandra Miller is a rising star in the world of new music composition. She moved to Montreal from Victoria, BC. She is the 2011 recipient of the Jules Léger Prize and the artistic director of Innovations en concert.

Walter Boudreau has been working in new music for decades. He is a performer, conductor and composer. He is the artistic director of the Ensemble de la Société de musique contemporaine du Québec and Montreal/New Music International Festival.

We invitied to come into our studio and help explain why we have a hard time with unconventional compositions, and why we should train our ears to new sounds.
