Cinq à Six in the Summer -- July 21, 2012
In the first part of the show, Bombino.
He was raised in the republic of Niger and is one of the great guitar players emerging on the World Music scene today. He was born in 1980 into a family of nomadic Tuareg herders.
His early travels to Algeria and Libya put him in contact with professional musicians - it was also the first time that he was exposed to the music of Ali Farka Toure', Jimi Hendrix and others.
In this CBC Radio 2 recording at the Cabaret du Mile End in Montreal, Bombino is joined by fellow countrymen Ibrahim Emoud on percussion and drums and Kawissan Mohamed on rhythm guitar.
In the second part of the show, The Cuban Martinez Show.
This 11-piece band made up of recent emigrés from Cuba and homegrown Cuban musicians was the winner of the 2011 Syli D'or, an award given by The Festival Nuits D'Afrique to recognize the best young world music performers from Quebec.
This concert was recorded at the Cabaret du Mile End in Montreal.
