Interviewed by Rex Murphy on the January 17, 2010 program
"Are you satisfied with Canada's effort to help Haiti?"
Rex Murphy's introduction to the January 17, 2009 program:
"What's your reaction to events in Haiti? Are you satisfied with Canada's effort to help?"
Today we want to talk about the aftermath of Tuesday's devastating earthquake in Haiti. The international community is racing to rescue and provide relief to the millions affected. There are estimates of up to 50-thousand dead ...eight of them Canadians. Another 1,115 Canadians are missing. Rescuers are still finding people alive in the rubble.
Supply lines are being setup through a damaged port and a tiny airport ...and some experts worry things will get worse before the situation is stabilized. Dehydration, hunger, disease, infection and civil unrest are all serious concerns.
Canada is responding with money, food, water, and military personnel. The government has promised to match private donations which have already surpassed $22-million dollars. There is also a plan to speed up immigration for eligible refugees.
What's your reaction to the disaster ...and the response? Are you satisfied with Canada's effort? What are your worries, concerns and thoughts?
I'm Rex Murphy ...on CBC Radio One ...and on Sirius satellite radio channel 137 ...this is Cross Country Checkup.
