Interviewed by host Rex Murphy on the December 13, 2009 program
"What is your favorite book?"
Host Rex Murphy's introduction to the December 13, 2009 program:
"What book do you recommend?"
Welcome to Cross Country Checkup. I'm Rex Murphy.
Our question today: "What book do you recommend for our annual Christmas book list?"
The assignment of this program is pretty straightforward: read any good books lately? If you have - if there is a book that really caught your interest, ignited an enthusiasm, recalled a moment - call us, tell us a little about it, and pass on the recommendation to a friend.
Now, books are very accommodating items. And we want this program to reflect their invitational character. You are not at an awards ceremony, and it's not just "winners" that we have to showcase. Books are as individual as tastes, and the out-of-the-way here is as welcome today as the number one bestseller.
The format is simple: we'd like to keep it to a book a caller, but obviously enthusiasm will sometimes make it difficult to hold to the rule too rigidly. And when you nominate a book. give some reason why it appealed to you, maybe where you heard of it, comments on style, how it relates to other books or other authors. After the program, our dedicated and numberless research department will take all your suggestions, place them on a list together with capsules of your remarks, and make them available on the web site here, or by mail in answer to a request from you.
It should be noted as well that your choices are not confined to new books - stuff published just this year. Make this as wide as you want to: fiction and non-fiction, verse, memoir, past, present, academic and pop, history, philosophy, literature or how-to.
We enjoy this show. We enjoy all the shows, but we enjoy this show, because listeners and callers seem to bring a particular relish to their reading, and to their encouragements to others to read.
So, please help us make our list. Get your recommendations ready, and give us a call.
