Cross Country Checkup is Canada's only national open-line radio program, broadcast live across Canada every Sunday afternoon on CBC Radio One, on Sirius satellite radio channel 137, and around the world on the Internet.

CBC Radio | Cross Country Checkup

Each week broadcaster and writer Rex Murphy presides over a lively discussion on an issue of national interest or importance, and invites listeners to call in with their opinions and thoughts.

Checkup is a Canadian tradition. We have been on the air most Sundays for 44 years. The program was first broadcast May 16, 1965, during the bitter debate over whether there should be a national publicly-funded health-care system (hence the somewhat medical name of the show!).

It has proven to be a mainstay in CBC Radio's mandate to reflect Canada to all Canadians. Close to half-a-million listeners tune in every Sunday afternoon to hear a lively exchange of ideas between callers and invited guests, and a broad cross-section of opinion on the topic of the day. On average, 5,000 to 10,000 people attempt to call the program during the broadcast to join the discussion.

Checkup in the Classroom

If you teach high school history, politics, civics, or even media studies then perhaps Cross Country Checkup can help ...without adding to your workload.

Every week our program looks at one of the big news issues of the week. We can offer your students content and insight into both the issue and our approach. We can also offer access to the program.

For students of politics, history, or civics, we could make available directly to the students some background material such as links, newspaper and magazine articles, and columns on the topic. They just have to ask.

For students of media studies who want insight into our approach, we could offer some correspondence with students, by e-mail or even a webpage, offering a list of the topics considered for each week, and the pros and cons as they relate to our programming.

For all classes, depending on the demand, we could offer students an easier opportunity to call-in to the program to voice their opinions. This might help students feel more engaged by the topic and the assignment. Also, depending on the demand (and his schedule), host Rex Murphy could be available by telephone for a 15-20 minute in-class question-and-answer session.
