ABOUT THE CANDIDATE:
In the most recent oil boom, oil companies bought up nearly every house for sale in the small town of Drayton Valley, Alberta - a small town of 6,500 people. The result was to make homes there unaffordable for most people. Even homes not sold outright were rented to oil company crews at astronomical prices - leaving some families unable to find housing or threatened with losing their homes, if they were renting.
Hack is a lifelong resident of Drayton Valley, where his father ran a supermarket in town, employing 40 people. Hack was always troubled that some employees could not find a stable place to live, even in a small town. He undertook the massive task of making a formal application to start a chapter of Habitat for Humanity for his community. But it was determined that the town was not big enough to support a chapter. So he took it upon himself to help his community and began his Humans Helping Humans Foundation, which has provided two families with housing, with a third family already selected for a home to be completed this year.
Tragically, at about the same time Hack began Humans Helping Humans in 2007, his youngest son was killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident at a family get-together. His loss has become an everyday struggle for his family, and while such a setback might cause others to put their volunteering efforts on the back-burner, it has only redoubled Hack's desire to help others.
Friend Sydnee Cowling, who nominated Hack, notes "I have never seen anything like this organization bringing so many people in the community together before. I have never seen anyone with such compassion for people he barely knew, and with this foundation Hack gets to help so many people."

Hack est un résident de longue date de la petite ville de Drayton Valley, en Alberta, où son père exploite un supermarché procurant du travail à 40 personnes. Hack Hamdon a toujours été préoccupé par le fait que certains employés du magasin ne parvenaient pas à trouver un endroit permanent où vivre, même dans une petite ville comme Drayton Valley. Au cours du plus récent boom pétrolier, les sociétés pétrolières ont acheté pratiquement toutes les maisons à vendre dans la région, ce qui a rendu les maisons pratiquement inabordables pour la plupart des gens, et les maisons qui n'avaient pas été vendues ont été louées sur le champ à des prix astronomiques pour loger les équipes de travailleurs des sociétés pétrolières, laissant plusieurs familles à la rue ou presque.
Devant cette pénurie, Hack Hamdon a entrepris de soumettre une demande officielle pour lancer une section de l'organisation Habitat for Humanity dans sa collectivité, un travail colossal. Les responsables ont cependant jugé que Drayton Valley (une petite ville de 6 500 habitants) n'était pas suffisamment importante pour accueillir une section de l'organisation. Il a donc décidé de prendre le taureau par les cornes et d'aider sa collectivité en mettant sur pied sa propre organisation appelée Humans Helping Humans Foundation. À ce jour, cet organisme a déjà fourni un logement à deux familles et une troisième famille a déjà été sélectionnée pour habiter une maison dont la construction se terminera cette année.
Son ami Sydnee Cowling, qui a présenté la candidature de Hack, nous a confié ce qui suit : « Je n'ai jamais vu une organisation capable de mobiliser autant de gens de la collectivité dans un même effort. Je n'ai jamais vu quelqu'un avoir autant de compassion pour des gens qu'il connaît à peine. Grâce à cette fondation, Hack aide beaucoup de gens. »
