House waives privilege claim, freeing AG to release committee emails

Promise made, promise kept: Just moments after Question Period wrapped up, the House of Commons unanimously agreed to back down from its claim that correspondence between committee staff and Auditor General Michael Ferguson should not be released under the Access to Information Act, thus bringing to an apparent close a brewing battle over the limits of parliamentary privilege that ultimately could have landed both the Commons and the AG in federal court.

In response, Commons Speaker Andrew Scheer delivered the following statement, in which he explained just how the seemingly Kafka-esque standoff between parliamentary entities had arisen in the first place.

Noting that today's decision "applies only to the case at hand," Scheer predicted that "today's issue will not be the last of its kind," which is why he would "welcome" a full review of the decision by Procedure and House Affairs.
