Fishermen on Fogo Island are Worried about Oil Spills, and Now they're Taking Action

Several times since last spring, people on Fogo Island, Change Islands and in the Twillingate area have been seeing oil slicks on the water and on their beaches. The Coast Guard confirmed the oil was coming from the sunken paper carrier Manolis L, and patched up the holes in the ship's hull to stop the leaks.

That doesn't satisfy people who are worried a good storm will break open the hull, causing a major spill. Now, the Fogo Island Harbour Authority and the Shorefast Foundation are taking action.Today and tomorrow, they're hosting a course in oil spill response.

Gordon Slade is with Shorefast, joins us to tell us about this initiative.
