Discussion On the Reduction of Family Physician Service in Gander

For the last couple of weeks, we've been asking questions about the recent reduction of family physician availability in Gander. The local fee-for-service medical clinic has cut walk-in access in half, due to a doctor shortage. The problem is complex and of great concern to thousands of residents of Gander and the surrounding area.

We've heard from the manager of the medical clinic, Larry Dawson. Patient Doreen Chaulk of Victoria Cove told us about her situation as she fights cancer while knowing she's about to lose her family doctor. Dr.Steve Parsons, an obstetrician in Grand Falls-Windosr has weighed in with his view of the service differences between his community and Gander. Gander mayor Claude Elliott told us about his concerns regarding health care as a vital community service. And Dr.Sandra Luscombe, the president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association gave us her thoughts about the need for proper planning at the provincial government level to ensure adequate service. Attached are those interviews.
