RIDING PROFILE

 Riding Map
This is a diverse rural riding in southwest Alberta, abutting B.C. in the west and Calgary's city limits in the south. The riding contains prairies, foothills and spectacular mountains, and runs from Airdrie to Olds in the east and from Cochrane to Canmore and Banff in the west. Banff National Park runs along the western border. The Stoney reserve is in the southern part of the riding.

Nearly 10 per cent of people here are immigrants.

The economy is a mixture of agriculture, tourism and the service sector. The average family income in 2001 was $75,868 and unemployment was 4.4 per cent.

Wild Rose was formed in 1986 and was largely unaltered until 2004, when a quarter of its population was carved away. Added were 4,518 former residents of the Red Deer riding and five people from Macleod.

Political History
Conservative Myron Thompson has walked over his competition in the past four elections. His 2004 victory was by 27,366 votes over the runner-up, Liberal Judy Stewart. He ran as a Reformer in 1993 and 1997 and under the Canadian Alliance banner in 2000.

Before Thompson came to office, this had been Tory territory for many years.

Education: Holds a BA in business administration and education from the University of Adams State in Colorado, along with a year of post-graduate studies

Career background: Worked as a teacher, guidance counsellor and principal at Sundre junior and senior high schools and was also a fruit and vegetable inspector in Colorado. He was in the U.S. Army Service from 1958-1960. At present, he is a member of the Sundre Elks Service Club, as well as a former member in various recreational clubs.

Sean Maw

Party: The Green Party of Canada

Career Background: Has been the director of engineering research at the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary for three years. Has also taught neuroscience and engineering at the university. Is an instructor in the engineering program at Mount Royal College, and is helping to develop their new industrial design program

Community activities: Chairs the Town of Cochrane's Noise and Nuisance Bylaw review task force, and was the vice-president of the Riverview Community Association during its successful campaign to prevent the development of the Cochrane Driving Range. He also chairs the Club & Membership Development Committee of Speed Skating Canada, and has been an active volunteer in the sport for more than 15 years

Party: Liberal Party of Canada

Birthplace: Sweetsburg, Que.

Education: Holds a diploma in Education (specializing in art education) and a diploma in special ed.(specializing in child psychology) from McGill University, as well as a bachelor of education degree from the University of Calgary.
Profession: Lawyer

Marital Status: Married
Name of Spouse: Bruce
Children: Two

Career Background: Practices law in Cochrane, primarily in administrative law, water law, wills and contracts.

Community Activities: Volunteers with various organizations including the Bow River Basin Council, where she is a Director, and the Terry Fox Run, which she organizes every year. In 1992, she received the Governor General's Commemorative Medal for community volunteerism.

Political History
Municipal: She was a town councillor in Cochrane, Alta. from 1992- 1998. In October 2001, she became mayor and held that post until 2004.
Provincial: Defeated in Banff-Cochrane in 1997.
