Political History
The current incumbent, Peter Goldring, has held office for two terms. He won with the Reform party in 1997, upsetting then-incumbent Judy Bethel, a Liberal, by 3,470 votes. In 2000, under the Canadian Alliance banner, he defeated Liberal Sue Olsen by 3,445 votes.
Over the past half-century, this riding has been held by a wide range of parties. In 1953 and 1957 the Social Credit party took this seat, after which the Tories enjoyed a 30-year winning streak. Then, in 1988, incumbent PC Bill Lesick lost by 657 votes to the NDP's Ross Harvey. Harvey thus became the first New Democrat to win a federal seat in Alberta. Harvey, in turn, was replaced by the Liberal's Bethel in 1993.
Riding established as Edmonton East in 1914. Riding named changed to Edmonton Centre-East on June 29/00. Riding re-established as Edmonton East in 2004.
