RIDING PROFILE

 Riding Map
This rural eastern Ontario riding takes in the city of Prince Edward and the county of Hastings, excluding the city of Quinte West (Trenton). The riding extends north from Lake Ontario and includes Belleville, Bancroft, Deseronto and Madoc, as well as the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.

Major industries are manufacturing and retail trade with some agriculture. Average family income is $56,433 and unemployment is 7.3 per cent.

The riding was established in 1966. There was no change in 1996. In the 2004 redistribution, a portion of the riding of Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington was added in the north.

Population: 109,407

Political History
In 2004, Conservative Daryl Kramp defeated Liberal Bruce Knutson by 2,556 votes.

Liberal Lyle Vanclief was the MP from 1988 until 2004. He was minister of agriculture from 1997 until December 2003. Prior to the December cabinet shuffle, he had announced he wouldn't run again.

Prince Edward-Hastings riding elected Conservatives to the House from 1968 to 1984. From 1988 to 2000, the riding voted Liberal.

Robert Vaughan

Career Background: House Physician at Crown Ridge in Quinte West and the Belmont Long Term Care Facility in Belleville. Served as the Medical Adviser to the Prince Edward-Hastings Home Care Program (Access Centre) from its inception in the 1970's until 2004. Earned his Certification in Family Medicine in 1976 and became a Preceptor in Family Medicine and a lecturer at Queen's University. Joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer in 1960 and became a subsidized medical student. In 1967 he was promoted to the rank of Major and the position of Base Surgeon at C.F.B. Trenton. He was honourably released from the Forces in 1968. Operated a retail sports store in Belleville, with his wife Lois, for more than 10 years in the 1980s and '90s

Community Activities: Was the OHL chair of the Board for 10 years and has also served as vice-chair. He has received numerous awards for his contribution to Canadian Junior Hockey, including the OHL's Bill Long Award for his outstanding contribution and dedication to the development of Junior Hockey. He has also received the key to the City of Belleville and was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Member of Bridge Street United Church, The Belleville Club, the Belleville Sales and Ad Club and an Honourary Member of the Kinsmen Club of Belleville

Michael McMahon

Career Background: Took his first job as a teacher in Bancroft in 1976. Has been active in the OSSTF since the 1980s, first serving as a representative on a number of district committees, then after moving to Belleville to teach at Centennial and then Moira Secondary, serving as Branch President. Since moving to the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board as Curriculum Coordinator, Science and Technology, Michael has represented the OSSTF members there at District Council. This fall he returned to the classroom as head of the science department at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute.
