RIDING PROFILE

 Riding Map
This residential riding in west-end Toronto runs the gamut from stately homes near the Kingsway to pockets of no-frills public housing.

Etobicoke Centre is bordered by the Humber River to the east, Highway 401 and Dixon Road to the north, the CP line, Mimico Creek, Burnhamthorpe Road and Highway 427 to the south and Etobicoke Creek and Dundas Street West to the west.

According to the 2001 census, more than 19 per cent of the population is over 65, the highest such percentage in Ontario. The immigrant population is 42 per cent and more than 10 per cent are Italian.

Manufacturing is the largest employer, followed by retail trade and the service sector. Average family income is $93,277 and the unemployment rate is 5.9 per cent.

Etobicoke Centre riding was created in 1976 from parts of the former Etobicoke riding and High Park-Humber Valley. In 1996, 21 per cent of Etobicoke North was added. In the 2004 redistribution, a small part of Etobicoke North was added to Etobicoke Centre's northeastern edge.

Political History
In 2004, Liberal Borys Wrzesnewskyj was elected with more than twice as many votes as his nearest competitor, Conservative Lida Preyma.

Liberal Allan Rock held the riding for three terms. Rock resigned in December 2003 and was named ambassador to the United Nations. He served in Jean Chrétien's cabinet as minister of justice, attorney general, minister of health and minister of industry.

Progressive Conservative MP Michael Wilson held the riding from 1979 to 1993. He was minister of finance for seven years under Brian Mulroney.

Liberal Alastair Gillespie was MP for Etobicoke Centre from 1969 to 1979 and served as minister of energy, mines and resources, minister of state for science and technology and minister of industry, trade and commerce under Pierre Trudeau.

Career background: Was a partner in one of Canada's major management consulting firms. Later, was a principal with Resources Management Consultants Ltd. Has worked as a consultant in South-East Asia, the Orient, the Caribbean, Central and Eastern Europe, Western Europe and the former Soviet Union. Has been a special lecturer in industrial engineering at the University of Toronto and a visiting professor in industrial management at the University of the West Indies. For the last 30 years, has been a member on the advisory council of the mechanical and industrial engineering department at Ryerson University. Borys Wrzesnewskyj

Profession: Current president and owner of both the Future Bakery and M-C Dairy in Etobicoke, Ont.

Career background: Took over the family business at age 22. The Future Bakery, founded by his grandparents, employs more than 80 people today. Co-founder and executive member of the Annex Business Improvement Area. Co-founder and president of the Garrison Village Business Association. Executive member of the Niagara Neighbourhood Association. Named one of Ontario's Top 100 Entrepreneurs by the Ontario Business Journal

Community activities: As an activist, he funded, organized and supported civil rights groups and democratic reform on the ground in Ukraine prior to glasnost and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Today, the family continues to work in Ukraine, funding and organizing both relief efforts for orphans and post-secondary scholarship funds for promising students in need
