This small urban riding is at the south tip of Vancouver Island, and encompasses the city of Victoria, the adjacent municipality of Oak Bay, and the southeast corner of the District of Saanich, including the University of Victoria.

The 2001 census counted 104,561 residents, of whom 21 per cent are immigrants. About 19 per cent are older than 65 – the fifth-highest such proportion of any riding.

The local economy is primarily service-oriented, with the major employer being government. Tourism is also important. The average family income is $66,327, and unemployment is eight per cent.

This riding was unchanged in the 1996 and 2004 redistribution.

Political History
Liberal David Anderson has held the seat since 1993. In 2000, he beat the Canadian Alliance's Bruce Hallsor by 7,228 ballots. During his tenure, Anderson has served as the Minister of National Revenue, Transport, Fisheries and Oceans, and, currently, Environment.

In 1878, Sir John A. MacDonald was elected in this riding. Liberals dominated here in the 1960s, while Tory Allan McKinnon was MP from 1972-88. Then, New Democrat John Brewin took the riding for one term.

Riding originally existed as 2-member seat from 1872-1903. Riding re-established in 1924.
