This urban riding contains the part of Richmond north of Steveston Highway and west of the Oak Street Bridge, Highway 99, Cambrie Road, the No. 4 Road, Francis Road and the No. 3 Road. The riding has developed from a collection of market garden, agricultural and fishing communities into a metropolitan suburb.

The 2001 census counted 106,621 residents, with 57 per cent immigrants. The riding has the highest ethnic Chinese population in Canada.

Education levels are high in Richmond, with more than 19 per cent of residents possessing a university degree. The average family income is $61,489, and unemployment is 7.4 per cent.

In this year's redistribution, Richmond lost about one-third of its residents, while 14,000 new ones were added from Delta-South Richmond.

Political History
In 2000, the Canadian Alliance's Joe Peschilsolido unseated two-term incumbent Raymond Chan, a Liberal, by 1,124 votes. Peschilsolido subsequently crossed the floor to the Liberals. Earlier this year, Chan won back the Liberal nomination over Peschilsolido.

Before Chan, Tory Tom Siddon was MP here for 15 years, holding several cabinet positions.

Education: Holds a B.A.Sc. (applied science in engineering physics) from the University of British Columbia.
Profession: Engineer
Career Background: He has been in private business since 2000. He was a restaurant owner in Vancouver and an engineer and project team leader in the computing and electronics division of the TRIUMF Nuclear Research Centre at the University of British Columbia. As president of Global Business Development Inc., he helps business clients target newly emerging export markets for Canadian and British Columbian products in China, Taiwan and Korea.

University Degree: Yes
Education: Holds a B.Ed., M.Ed. and PhD from the University of British Columbia, where she was also an instructor. She also holds a diploma in teaching of English overseas from the University of Leeds in England.
Career Background: She was manager of international programs at Kwantlen University College, as well as professor and co-ordinator of entrepreneurship programs, and a project manager of international education, as well as co-ordinator of the Centre for Small Business at Vancouver Community College. She was also an instructor, English lecturer and teacher in Hong Kong. Since 1994, Alice and her husband own and operate their own research and education consulting firm.

Dale Jackaman

Party: New Democratic Party of Canada

Education: Graduated from college specializing in electronics and telecommunications.
Career Background: He was a computer professional and has many years of senior managerial experience in a broad range of computer, engineering and scientific research and development companies. In the community he was executive director of the Airspace Non-Smokers' Rights Society, and as a recent amputee, is a volunteer peer counsellor at the G.F. Strong rehabilitation facility and an active participant on the NDP's disabled rights committee. He is active in communications related regional emergency preparedness. Volunteer amateur radio instructor and examiner at the University of British Columbia. He is also a former United Nations peacekeeper with the Canadian Armed Forces Signal Corps.
