This riding, containing parts of New Westminster and Port Moody, encompasses the area between the Fraser River in the south, Burrard Inlet in the north, the Coquitlam River in the east, and 10th Avenue and North Road in the west. The 2001 census counted 109,301 residents, of whom nearly 29 per cent were immigrants. Ethnic groups include Chinese, East Indian and Italian.

The primary employers here are retail, manufacturing and the service sector. Nearly 14 per cent of residents have a university degree; 7.3 per cent are unemployed. The average family income is $68,407.

The riding was formed in 2004, by combining a large swath of New Westminster-Coquitlam-Burnaby with about one-quarter of Port Moody-Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam.

Political History
For the past three terms, New Westminster-Coquitlam-Burnaby was represented by Paul Forseth. He won under the Reform banner in 1993, edging out his Liberal opponent by a mere 814 votes. In 1997 his margin was 1,848 votes, and in 2000 he defeated Liberal Leo Rankin by more than 6,000 votes.

Before Forseth, the NDP reigned in this region, winning all but one election since 1962. Pauline Jewett was the MP here from 1979-88. Fellow New Democrat Dawn Black replaced her in 1988.

Party: Liberal Party of Canada

Career Background: A full-time officer of the Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada (IWA) since 1985. He became camp chairman at MacMillan Bloedel's Franklin River division in 1978, where he worked as a welder and a truck driver and served on the safety and camp committees during the 1970s. He was first elected as national president of the 55,000-member IWA in 1996; he has been re-elected twice since. He also sits on the executive council of the Canadian Labour Congress and has served as an executive officer of the BC Federation of Labour. He sits on the board of directors of Working Enterprises Ltd., Working Enterprises National Ltd., and Concert Properties and is a trustee of the IWA-Forest Industry Pension Plan.

Education: Holds an associate arts diploma from Douglas College, and a provincial instructor's diploma in adult education from Vancouver Community College.
Career Background: He served in a number of positions between 1992 and 2001 in the NDP government in British Columbia, including constituency assistant, executive assistant and ministerial assistant. As a small business person in New Westminster, he provides on-going support for non-profit and community groups to deal with government regulations and funding. He spearheaded projects for the 2010 Olympic Games to ensure workers and volunteers are treated fairly and that all workers receive a fair wage. He is also a member of the New View Society, which provides housing and support for seniors and persons with disabilities, and is director for the New Westminster Downtown Residents Association.
