This is a diverse rural riding in southwest Alberta, abutting B.C. in the west and Calgary's city limits in the south. The riding contains prairies, foothills and spectacular mountains, and runs from Airdrie to Olds in the east and from Cochrane to Canmore and Banff in the west. Banff National Park runs along the western border. The Stoney reserve is in the southern part of the riding.

The 2001 census counted 101,670 residents, of whom nearly 10 per cent are immigrants.

The economy here is a mixture of agriculture, tourism and the service sector. The average family income is $75,868 and unemployment is 4.4 per cent.

Wild Rose was formed in 1986 and was largely unaltered until 2004, when a quarter of its population was carved away. Added were 4,518 former residents of the Red Deer riding, and five people from Macleod.

Political History
Myron Thompson of the Reform/Canadian Alliance has walked over his competition in the past three elections. His 2000 victory was by 32,823 votes over the runner-up, Tory Truper McBride. Before Thompson came to office, this had been Tory territory for many years.

Education: Holds a diploma in Education (specializing in art education) and a diploma in special ed.(specializing in child psychology from McGill University, as well as a bachelor of education degree from the University of Calgary.
Career Background: She taught for two years in Quebec, where her students included Mistassini Cree students and students studying English as a second language. In 1974, she moved to Calgary, Alta., where she worked as a teacher's aide for the Calgary Catholic School Board during the day and attended the University of Calgary in the evenings. She taught special needs children before becoming a stay-at-home mom in Cochrane, Alta.

Career Background: He is a member of the Ojibways of Onegaming First Nation in northwestern Ontario. He was a guidance counsellor at Morley community school on the Stoney First Nation, west of Calgary, counselling students and working collaboratively with community elders. He served six years as a teacher and guidance counsellor on the Tsuu T'ina Nation, southwest of Calgary; in Surrey, B.C., and for the Calgary Board of Education, working with young people and adult learners. He has also trained and worked with Outward Bound Canada, guiding expeditions for aboriginal youth-at-risk and adult male survivors of abuse.
