2004 Candidates
Riding Profile
This central Edmonton riding is bounded by the North Saskatchewan River in the north, by Whitemud Creek and the North Saskatchewan River in the west, by Highway 2, Whitemud Drive and Highway 14 in the south, and by the city limits in the east. The historic district of Old Strathcona is here, centred on Whyte Avenue and 104th Street.
The 2001 census counted 98,974 residents, of whom nearly 17 per cent are immigrants. The north of the riding is also home to many of Edmonton's francophones.
Education and the service sector are the major employers. More than 24 per cent of residents have a university degree. The average family earns $69,415 annually, and unemployment is 6.4 per cent.
This riding was established in 1952. In the 2004 redistribution it lost about 18 per cent of its residents and gained about 9,000 from Edmonton Southeast.
Population: 98,974
Political History
Rahim Jaffer has held this riding for the past two terms. He won under the Reform banner in 1997, with a 3,000-vote win over Liberal Ginette Rodger. In 2000, he fended off Liberal Jonathan Dai, winning by 5,647 votes.
Prior to Jaffer, the seat was held by the Reform's Hugh Hanrahan, who took it from the
Tories in 1993. Up to that point, the Tories had held the riding in all but one race since
1958.
