This central Calgary riding runs between Bow Trail Southwest, 9th Avenue Southwest, Crowchild Trail Southwest and the Bow River in the north, Glenmore Trail and Highway 8 in the south, the CP Rail line in the east and Sarcee Trail Southwest in the west.

The 2001 census counted 117,439 residents. Nearly 21 per cent are immigrants, with a wide range of ethnocultural groups represented.

The service sector is the major employer here. Nearly 24 per cent of residents hold a university degree. Average family income is $85,530 and unemployment is 5.1 per cent.

This riding was created in 2004, bringing together nearly 71,000 residents formerly of Calgary Centre with 38,889 from Calgary West and 7,578 from Calgary Southwest.

Political History
The former Calgary Centre was Tory territory from 1968 to 1993, and was dominated for 21 of those years by Harvie Andre, who held a number of cabinet positions in PC governments. Then the Reform took over in 1993 and 1997. In 2000 the Tories returned, with then leader Joe Clark unseating Eric Lowther by 4,304 votes.

Riding was established in 2004 redistribution.

Julia Turnbull

Party: Liberal Party of Canada

Career Background: In l988, she founded her own law firm specializing in family law. In 1992, she was invited to join the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. In 1997 she was named president of the Calgary Bar Association, only the second woman in its nearly 100-year history. She resigned from her law practice in 2002 to work full-time on her campaign for the Liberal nomination. In her community, she has been a volunteer with the United Way, Calgary Legal Guidance, and Volunteer Calgary as well as being a significant donor to Calgary's theatre and AIDS organizations.

Profession: business person
Career Background: He began his career at CIBC in the late 1960s. He was an executive assistant to both John Diefenbaker and to the Alberta minister of industry and commerce. He was secretary to Cabinet in Alberta, and was also executive assistant, then executive director, to the office of the premier of Alberta. In the 1980s, he was deputy chief of staff to Brian Mulroney as Opposition Leader, and then was the director of scheduling, tour and special projects for the PMO. Currently, he is president of Lee Richardson Financial Corporation, involved in corporate finance and investment banking. He is a director and past chairman of ACD Systems International Inc., the developer of ACDSee image-viewing and management software. In the community, he served on the board of directors for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, and has been a past committee chairman of the Calgary Stampede.

Education: One year at Mohawk College in Hamilton studying music. Has taken courses including public speaking & parliamentary procedure and bargaining and negotiating.
Career Background: He spent three years with the Canadian Armed Forces serving in the field of medical services. He also worked for 13 years as a long-term health care employee at Southwood Nursing Home. He currently works as a general contractor. In the community, he was past president of CUPE Local 8, past co-chair of the Pride Calgary Association, past co-chair of the GLBT CUPE caucus, past alternate for the CUPE National Pink Triangle Committee, member of Friends of Medicare, and a past co-chair of Continuing Care Employees Committee CUPE. He is a founding member of the Diversity in Society Coalition and a member of the Coalition for Human Rights Challenge (Alberta Health & Welfare). He is also a member of Royal Canadian Legion #285.

Phillip Liesemer

Party: Green Party of Canada

Career Background: Was owner/manager of Full Moon Video from 1991-1996. He then went on to work as a manager of drive-in and movie theatre complexes until 2000, when he turned his attention to the performing arts. Since then, he has been working in Arts administration for various local theatre companies. Currently, he is the audience services manager for the Vertigo theatre complex. He is also a partner in Pariah Entertainment Group, a film and video production company that is currently in post-production on its second feature film.
