Riding Profile
This riding is in central Calgary, bounded on the south by the Deerfoot Trail Southeast and
114th Avenue Southeast, in the east by the city limits, and in the north by the Trans-Canada
Highway. The western boundary runs from the CP Rail line to the Elbow River, Memorial Drive
Southeast and the Deerfoot Trail Northeast.
The 2001 census counted 115,565 residents. Aboriginal people, East Indians and Chinese-Canadians
all make up small sub-populations. More than 22 per cent of the residents here are
immigrants.
Significant employers include manufacturing and retail trade. Rail lines and
the Trans-Canada Highway support transportation and storage industries. The average family
income is $56,761 and unemployment is six per cent.
Calgary East was formed in 1996 from nearly equal-sized portions of the Calgary Northeast
and Calgary Southeast ridings. In 2004, the riding added another 13,683 people from Calgary
Southeast. Historically, Calgary East existed from 1914 to 1952 and from 1976 to 1986.

Political History
Deepak Obhrai has represented the riding for the past two terms. He gained office with the
Reform party in 1997, defeating a Tory by 6,042 votes. In 2000, Obhrai's margin was 11,298
votes, this time over a Liberal, Doug Perras. Prior to the 1996 redistribution, both Calgary
Northeast and Calgary Southeast were represented by Reform Party members. Before that, Tories
had long been dominant.

the oil and gas sector as a landman doing exploration, and then
as a consultant in the industry. He was twice seconded by the Public
Service Commission of Canada's Participation Canada Interchange
Program to work as a ministerial adviser for the Department of Indian
and Northern Affairs. He was executive assistant to Liberal Senator
Earl Hastings from 1972 -1975. He is currently president/CEO of the
Cathay Trading Corporation, and president of
junior capital pool Cathay Energy. In the community, he has worked
with a wide range of organizations as a volunteer, including serving
as chair of the Seventh Step Society and Multiple Sclerosis Society,
as a Canadian Progress Club Charter member, vice-chair for the Middle
East and Africa for the Calgary Expo 2005 bid committee, and the
city of Calgary's municipal building advisory committee.
