This riding contains the southeast portion of Regina (south of the CP rail line and east of Albert Street) and then stretches to the east and southeast, taking in many small, rural communities.

The 2001 census counted 72,508 residents; more than eight per cent are immigrants.

The Wascana riding includes the provincial legislature, the University of Regina and the Centre of the Arts. The service sector is the main employer. For Saskatchewan, incomes are high: $71,382 for the average family. Unemployment is 5.9 per cent. Nearly 15 per cent of residents have a university degree.

Wascana was formed in 1996 by merging two-thirds of Regina-Wascana with one-third of Regina-Qu'Appelle.

Political History
After electing the NDP twice (in 1979 and 1984), voters in the area went Tory in 1988. Since then they've elected Liberal Ralph Goodale. His most recent win, in 2000, was by 1,752 votes over the Canadian Alliance's James Rybchuk. In the past decade Goodale has overseen a number of cabinet portfolios, including Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Public Works and Services. In December he was named Finance Minister.

Doug Cryer

Career Background: He became a manager in a restaurant chain during high school, and following high school started a successful small business that provided jobs to six to eight employees. Prior to serving as parliamentary staff, he pastored congregations in cities and small communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan. He served as executive assistant to MP Roy Bailey (Souris-Moose Mountain, SK) for the past seven years.

Erin Weir

Education: Holds a BA in economics, history, and political science from the University of Regina. He is currently completing a master of arts degree in history through the University of Calgary.
Career Background: He has worked as a researcher for the Saskatchewan Elocution and Debate Association and for former Saskatchewan premier Allan Blakeney. He has also worked as a communications consultant for Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs and Housing, as a teaching assistant for the University of Regina's department of economics and as a research assistant for the Saskatchewan Institute of Public Policy.

Political History
Party: He was the director of organization and fundraising with the Saskatchewan Young New Democrats, as well as vice-president, president and past-president. On the governing bodies of the Saskatchewan NDP, he was a member of the provincial council and SNDP committees from Mar. 1998 - Aug. 2002. He was a member of the provincial executive, and in his local riding has held the position of vice-president and other offices as part of the Regina Victoria provincial NDP association. He has been an executive member of the Wascana federal NDP since Dec. 2003, and has been vice-president of Regina Douglas Park provincial NDP since Jan. 2004.

Career Background: He is a baker, a shop steward where he works, and a trade union activist. He actively supports the Mental Health Association of Regina and Epilepsy Regina.
