Riding Profile
This is a mainly suburban riding located in the northeast end of the City of Winnipeg. It runs between the Red River in the west and eastern limits of the city. The southern boundary is Mission Street/Plessis Rd./St Boniface Rd./Murdock Rd./Dugald Rd. The northern boundary is Oakland Ave./McLeod Ave./Grassie Blvd./Perfanick Dr./Angela/CP line/Winnipeg city limits.
Manufacturing, particularly bus and furniture manufacturers, employs the greatest number within the community followed by other services.
The total immigrant population is almost 13 per cent. Only 9.62 per cent listed 'Canadian' as their ethnic origin, while over 40 per cent listed 'other' and almost 50 per cent had multiple responses.
The average family income is $54,615 with an unemployment rate of 6.10 per cent.
The riding of Winnipeg-Transcona was created in the 1986 redistribution from 60 per cent of Winnipeg-Birds Hill and 19 per cent of Winnipeg North Centre. In 1996, it kept 98 per cent of riding and added a small area from Saint Boniface.
In 2004, the riding became Elmwood-Transcona and kept 97 per cent of riding (population=77,997).
Political History
The riding was established in 1986 mostly from the Winnipeg-Birds Hill riding, where ND Bill Blaikie won in 1979, 1980 and 1984. ND Bill Blaikie, incumbent from Winnipeg-Birds Hill, also won here in 1988 and 1993. In 1997, ND Blaikie defeated LIB Rosemary Broadbent by 9,535 votes. In 2000, ND Blaikie defeated CA Shawn Rattai by 7,344 votes.
The riding was established in 1986.
