2004 Candidates
Riding Profile
This new central Ontario riding takes in the area south of Lake Simcoe and
straddles Highway 400 south of Barrie. It contains the towns of East Gwillimbury
and Georgina, the part of King township lying north of Highway 9, and part
of Simcoe County, including Bradford West Gwillimbury and Innisfil.
The Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation Reserve and the Holland Marsh
fall in the riding. Manufacturing is the main industry, with employment
also in retail and construction. Average family income is $72,956 and unemployment
is four per cent.
York-Simcoe riding was created in the 2004 redistribution from 47 per cent
of York North, 33 per cent of Barrie-Simcoe-Bradford and one per cent of
Simcoe-Grey. Population:

Political History
In 2000 in York North, Liberal Karen Kraft Sloan defeated the Alliance's Bob
Yaciuk. PC John Cole was elected MP in York North in 1988. In Barrie-Simcoe-Bradford,
Liberal Aileen Carroll defeated the Alliance's Rob Hamilton. She was appointed
Minister for International Co-operation in December 2003 by Paul Martin.
If the Conservatives successfully capture both the old Tory and Alliance
vote in this redistributed riding they should defeat the Liberals.

Education: Holds a master's degree in conflict analysis
and management, and peace and conflict Studies from Royal Roads University.
Profession: Registered nurse and a nurse practitioner.
Career Background: Worked for many years with her
husband at the Bradford Medical Walk-in Clinic, serving the health-care
needs of a large multicultural population. She was part of an emergency
response team that helped victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras,
and also tended to the health-care needs of the most vulnerable people
in the high Andes mountains in Ecuador. She has served on the board
of directors for Hospice-Simcoe and the Red Cross. Part of her training
was conducted at the United Nations, in Sarajevo, the former Yugoslavia
and throughout Bosnia.

Career Background: Was called to the bar in 1989. He became a partner and chair of a planning and development law
group at the national law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. He was an adjunct professor of planning at the University of Toronto and a former
executive member of the Canadian Bar Association (Ontario, Municipal Section). In the community, he was a member of Georgina Against
Garbage from 1993 to 1995; a former member of the Georgina Economic Development Committee; a member of of the Ontario Brownfields advisory
Panel, and a chair of the Land Use Planning sub-committee of the Brownfields Panel in 2000.

she tutored reading at East End Literacy in Toronto, has planned and
executed a fundraiser for a shelter, has volunteered in a pioneer
museum and has been a community choir member. She is a long-time member
of the Council of Canadians and Greenpeace.
