Leamington council debates new town hall

The town council in Leamington is debating whether to use stimulus money from the federal and provincial governments to build a new town hall.
Council is set to hold a public meeting Thursday night to debate the proposal, which is expected to cost $12.5 million.
Mayor John Adams said stimulus funding from Ottawa and the province would cover two-thirds of the cost of the new building.
“If we were not getting the stimulus dollars of $8.2 million, we would not even be looking at it,” Adams said.
"Because of the timeline for these infrastructure dollars, we didn't want to hold it up for another week or two. If the contract is within our budget and is awarded, then the contractor could start doing some work on the property immediately,” Adams said.
The town has already received 10 tenders to build the new town hall.
However, some residents have said the proposal is still too costly, and have asked the town to make renovations and improvements to the existing municipal building instead.
